Mic Monster
An AI voiceover product with thousands of active users — where metering, credits, and a render queue decide the unit economics.
What they needed — in their own words
“Users type text, pick a voice, and download audio. Free users get a taste, paid plans get volume. When a viral spike hits, renders should queue up instead of falling over — and nobody should get billed for a failed render.”
The system they run on today
- Voiceover studio with voice selection and preview
- Credit metering tied to plans and top-ups
- Render queue with backpressure under spike load
- Billing that only charges for delivered audio
Arrived, assessed, hardened
Every Neolen engagement follows the same path: an honest assessment of what's actually there, then the hardening work that makes it a system. Here is how it played out on this one.
What arrived
A product with real scale — thousands of active users — and unit economics leaking at the seams: renders that failed after debiting credits, and a queue that fell over exactly when traffic spiked and the product was winning.
What the assessment found
The assessment put the metering-billing seam at the top of the risk list: at Mic Monster's volume, silently overcharging users for failed renders was both a support fire and a refund liability compounding daily. The queue's behaviour under spike load came second.
What we hardened and shipped
We wrapped render debits in a reserve-commit pattern — credits are held, committed only on successful delivery, and auto-released on failure — and rebuilt the queue with backpressure, verified under forced-failure and spike-load testing.
What the client runs on today
Mic Monster serves a high-volume free and paid user base with billing its users never have to dispute, through traffic spikes that would have taken down the old queue.
Added to the playbook
Reserve-commit metering became our verified module for every usage-billed product, and the forced-failure billing test is a standing audit check.
“I have been working with Neolen for over a year now and I am extremely satisfied with their service.”
